The Darling Exchange Building
Updated: Nov 22, 2021
The Darling Exchange building in the heart of Sydney’s burgeoning Darling Square precinct will play a key role in the city’s ambition to become Australia’s leading commercial centre for hi-tech innovation. It will comprise a contemporary library with a dedicated IQ-Hub and Makerspace.
The Darling Exchange will be a six-storey community and retail building with a facade wrapped in 20 kilometres of sustainably sourced timber. It will include a ground floor market hall, mezzanine restaurant, a childcare centre and a rooftop bar and restaurant with views over Tumbalong Park, the Chinese Gardens and Cockle Bay.
The state-of-the-art public building will play a key role in the city’s ambition to become Australia’s leading commercial centre for hi-tech innovation, providing spaces for creativity and invention. The building will be the centrepiece of Darling Square, which sits at the heart of the NSW Government’s $3.4 billion transformation of Darling Harbour.
Nicholas Tselios, from Renzo Tonin & Assoc, says “This project offers a lot of challenges from an acoustics perspective, with conflicting uses all contained in one building. So we have worked hard with the design team to overcome these while meeting the client’s expectations and achieving excellence in the process.”
